Catalyzing Green Business in Ethiopia

Since 2021, Reach for Change, with the support of the IKEA Foundation, has been implementing a pilot project in Ethiopia aimed at inspiring young people to establish green enterprises. This innovative approach has been delivered in collaboration with four higher education institutions in Addis Ababa, consisting of two TVETs (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) and two universities. The pilot has yielded valuable learnings and insights, including the implementation of a Green Entrepreneurship Bootcamp and a Green Innovation Lab.

Nathan Damtew studied computer science at the University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. When he started his education, he struggled to understand and learn how to work with programming. A big reason for this was that he had no introduction to coding before he started University. That’s when the idea came of introducing coding much earlier for children and youth, in order to prepare them for future education.

Reach for Change and IKEA Foundation to support young people in Ethiopia to start green businesses

The IKEA Foundation is investing 1 million US dollars in Reach for Change to support and develop green entrepreneurship and green jobs in Ethiopia. In total, the project will educate 360 young people in entrepreneurship and support 60 green solutions to develop into sustainable green businesses.

Students Bootcamp Training in Ethiopia

Government officials state that the unemployment rate in Assosa (a town in Ethiopia) is relatively high compared to other regions of the country. This is one of the main reasons why Reach for Change in partnership with GIZ Ethiopia decided to organize the special program and training for students intended to help them create a work opportunity for themselves rather than just wait to be employed.
