Research has shown alarmingly high levels of functional illiteracy in Bulgaria. Two out of five Bulgarian teenagers are unable to understand the texts they read, to analyze the information and use it in a different context. Data are exceptionally concerning as they mean that many children cannot use the knowledge, they gain in schools in actual life situations, and could hardly achieve a successful career on the labour market after graduation.
Knigovishte is an online education platform designed for children aged 6 – 16 which develops children’s reading comprehension skills and enhances the pleasure of book reading. Knigovishte is an online book quizzes’ game that can be played by individual child or teen as well as by an entire school class or a group. Accomplishments are rewarded by points, upgrade of reading levels and by other incentives taking into account the complexity of the book and the user’s age. The system also encourages users to share book recommendations, communicate with peers, and keep up digital readers’ diaries. Knigovishte builds a bridge between analog reading and the digital technologies thereby fostering children’s and teens’ readership.
