Saad Yusuf Hashi & Firdawsa Ahmed
Saad and Firdawsa seek to improve communication between teachers and parents who have a minority background. The goal is to support parents so they better can help their children to develop their socially skills and reach their full potential academically.
In Norway, children who come from a minority background often have difficulties developing their social skills, and this prevents them from reaching their full academic potential. In the past, no one has worked with parents of minority families to gain knowledge about what is expected from them and their children in Norwegian schools. Because children of minority families do not usually receive the necessary guidance to succeed academically, they often feel left out, which contributes to a higher dropout rate and eventually higher societal costs.
Through Atlas Kompetanse, Saad and Firdawsa are improving the communication between teachers and parents of minority families. By providing tools that help parents develop their children’s social skills, they hope that all children, regardless of their background, will achieve their highest education level and social standing. That is their vision for Atlas Kompetanse. In the courses they facilitate, Saad and Firdawsa build on the parents’ knowledge and experience of the school systems in their home country. Using this understanding, they bridge the communication gap between teachers and parents, which gives the children better chances at finishing school and continuing their education.
