SEE THE LIFE
“Majskola” (Home-school) is a website, where children from all around the world can connect to knowers - people, who are professionals in their field and are ready to share their knowledge and experience. The goal of this project is to give a possibility to children, who have various health issues, to get free additional education and get a possibility to improve their social skills and self-esteem, as well as reduce the amount of bullying towards children, who are “different” and teach healthy kids sympathy.
In Latvia, children with physical disabilities are often excluded from society. Many families who care for them do not know efficient ways of improving their children’s motor functions, which leaves families strapped for more time and money. At the same time, there is not enough services in Latvia that focus on treating physical disabilities. Those that exist are either too expensive or have long queues. As a result, parents resort to hiding their children from society to protect them from the prejudices and negative attitudes towards them.
At her organization, See the Life, Rita Riekstiņa created a website where children and their parents can learn about exercises that will improve motor control and receive advice on how to navigate society while living with physical disabilities. Families can also communicate with their doctors via video conferences, avoiding long queues. By providing video and written instructions and alternative ways of receiving treatments, Rita hopes to save families time and financial resources to support their children towards leading active and independent lives.
