Maria Lenskjold Christensen

Læseuniverset

Maria has founded and runs Læseuniverset (The Universe of Reading), which is an intensive reading and writing course offered in-house at her Læseuniverset-school. Children attending are either taken out of class or receive teaching in their school-holidays. The reading course is so efficient, that a week at Læseuniverset, on average, raises the child’s lix-number (the ability to read and write increasingly complex words) by 3 (compared to 5, on average, in a whole school year)!

Problem

Reading and writing difficulties are well-known problems in today’s Denmark. The combination, however, of the increased pressure on the budgets of the ground schools and the increasing demands on the teachers, has increased the problem of solving these problems to new heights. Today children are tested on their academic skills as early as the 1st grade, and if the results are negative it can have a disseminating effect on these 6 to 7-year-old children, which can lead to a number of permanent disablements. This even though the children have many competencies in fields other than reading/writing. On the parent’s side, more and more experience difficulties in the communications with the ground schools, and the child therefore seldom receive the necessary help.

Solution

By giving the children with reading/writing difficulties an intensive reading and writing course offered in-house at her Læseuniverset-school, the children that lack the necessary support are helped. The children are either taken out of class or receive teaching in their school-holidays. The reading course is so efficient, that a week at Læseuniverset, on average, raises the child’s lix-number (the ability to read and write more and more complex words) by 3 (compared to 5, on average, in a whole school year)! Furthermore, the children experience a huge boost in their academic proficiency and motivation, but maybe even more importantly, their self-confidence within all aspects of their lives is increased – so after a week of successful experiences they can return to their school, their class mates and their families with a whole different and much more positive view on life.
