De Stærke Børn
The idea for De Stærke Børn (The Strong Children) came from founder Henriette Karlsens own experiences of a troubled childhood. Henriette was abused, experienced neglect of care and was placed outside the home several times throughout her childhood. These experiences of neglect from the public system fueled her desire of taking responsibility for the vulnerable children and their families. She simply felt that something had to be done.
The meeting with the various public agencies can be both a confusing and complicated experience for many. The authorities’ judicial and administrative warrants and bureaucratic configuration can oftentimes create a distance between citizen and institution.
In order for the corporation and relation between citizen and public agencies not to become impeded, it can for some people be beneficiary to have a person with the same experiences in life by their side. De Stærke Børn contributes by giving vulnerable children, youths and their families support and counselling when meeting the various public agencies, and thereby help create a greater cohesion and reestablish the trust between the parties. In addition to acting as assessors, De Stærke Børn advocates the rights of all children, especially those in the most vulnerable of situations. They do so by hosting conferences and giving lectures and workshops on the subject. In addition to that, they also facilitate more hands-on initiatives that help vulnerable children here and now, as for example their Mad-på-Lad (Food-Haul) initiative where they get sponsors to donate food which they, by cargo bike, take to the children on the streets.
